I'm very glad that you are interested in learning more about the adventure and journey of building a life with Jesus just like the first disciples experienced with Him.
My hope for this serialized version of the Intentional Disciples of Jesus book is that individuals and small groups will find it useful to reorient life and refocus attention on Jesus. He intends to be as central and dynamic in each of our lives today, as he was with the first disciples.
This ambition is nothing new for those who have met Jesus and heeded his call to come and follow. Consider the words of Gregory of Nazianzus, a fourth century believer who lived and served Jesus in ancient Cappadocia.
Yesterday I was crucified with him; today I am glorified with him; yesterday I died with him, today I am quickened with him; yesterday I was buried with him; today I rise with him. But let us offer to him who suffered and rose again for us—you will think perhaps I am going to say gold or silver or woven work or transparent and costly stones, the mere passing material of earth, that remains here below, and is for the most part always possessed by bad people, slaves of the world and of the prince of the world.
Let us offer ourselves, the possession most precious to God, and most fitting; let us give back to the Image what was made after the Image. Let us recognize our Dignity; let us honor our Archetype; let us know the power of the mystery, and for what Christ died. Let us become like Christ, since Christ became like us.
Let us become God’s for his sake, since he for ours became human. He assumed the worst so that he might give us the better; he became poor that we through his poverty might become rich. He took upon himself the form of a servant that we might receive back our liberty; he came down that we might be exalted; he was tempted that he might conquer; he was dishonored that he might glorify us; he died that he might save us; he ascended that he might draw us to himself, who were lying low in the Fall of sin. Let us give him all, offer all to him who gave himself a ransom and a reconciliation for us.
Gregory of Nazianzus
How to get the most from what you find here
There are two ways you can go deeper with this material, if you find it helpful.
First, read How to get the most from this book. I offer some suggestions about how to do more than skim the pages and move on with minimal impact.
Second, read How to use this book with a small group. This material was formed and proven in a small group setting that seems to be very effective at helping participants engage with Jesus at a much deeper and transformative level than is typical in our churches today.
